PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve ease of use for a user by performing such operations as change and mounting of a plurality of cartridges, not by user's judgement but automatically and without fail. SOLUTION: A recorder has: a carriage having two pockets which print heads are freely removably mounted to; an auto-loading mechanism for mounting or separating the print heads to or from the carriage in a changing position one by one automatically; and a determination means for determining whether the heads mounted to the carriage are mounted to regular pockets. When the heads are mounted to irregular pockets, the heads are separated from the carriage by the mechanism (S14); the carriage is moved so that it changes the pocket arrangement (S15); and the operation to mount (S16) the heads to the pockets moved to a change position is repeated until the heads are mounted to the regular pockets.
