PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that an image reader has a function for simultaneously reading both sides of a document, however, a document reversal mechanism is used as in the conventional manner when a color document is included from capability difference of two reading sensors, both sides are simultaneously read in the case of only monochrome documents, it is inconvenient since a user has to select a reading function before starting a scan operation and in addition, even when only a part is the color document, the scan operation can not efficiently be performed since the reading mode is set at first. SOLUTION: The image reader has a first reading part capable of reading both the monochrome document and the color document, a second reading part capable of reading only the monochrome image, a sensor which detects whether or not the document is the color document is included in the second reading part, and switching between the both sides simultaneous reading and the conventional reading is performed for each document by color document detection of the second reading part.
