PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and an authentication method capable of simply managing certificates to distributingly located devices without connection to a certificate station. SOLUTION: The device disclosed herein includes: a storage means that stores a network identifier for particularizing an adhoc network, a network certificate corresponding to the network identifier, a possessor registration key corresponding to the network identifier, and a device certificate generated by the certificate station; and an authentication means that determines the adhoc network in which the device takes part on the basis of the possessor registration key and the network certificate, and exchanges the device certificate with other devices to carry out mutual authentication.
