PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact projector capable of yielding a projected image free from flicker. SOLUTION: The projector is provided with two pairs of LCOSes 3 and 4 constituted of ferroelectric liquid crystal elements, and when either of them performs reverse display, the other performs usual display. The polarized light of the reverse display is cut from projected light emitted from a PBS 2 so that only the polarized light of the usual display may be projected by using a polarized light control element 41 and a polarizing plate 42. As a result, since the projection is performed without turning off illumination, the lowering of the projected light quantity is avoided even if the LCOSes 3 and 4 are the ferroelectric liquid crystal elements requiring the reverse display. Furthermore, since the polarized light control element 41 and the polarizing plate 42 have only to be provided on the emission side of the PBS 2, the size of the entire projector is made small and cost rise is restrained as compared with the conventional projector provided with an LED and a PSB block for every color.
