PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color projector which can be miniaturized. SOLUTION: An illumination part 1 is provided with a high-luminance white LED 11, and white light emitted from the illumination part 1 is made incident on a wavelength variable filter 4. An electric field control double refraction cell using nematic liquid crystal is used for the wavelength variable filter 4, and the wavelength of transmitted light is varied by varying applied voltage. In the wavelength variable filter 4, the applied voltage is controlled by a filter control circuit 62, thereby selecting any of an R color light transmitted state, a G color light transmitted state and a B color light transmitted state. As a result, the state of the wavelength variable filter 4 is switched in order of R, G and B, and a color image is projected by displaying the respective R, G and B images of an LCOS 3 synchronously with such switching. By synchronizing the switching of the wavelength variable filter 4 with the reverse display of the LCOS 3 and turning off the illumination part 1 at such a time, the excellent color display is obtained.
