PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an undersize printing engine of a built-in type which is easy to handle and can be built in machines of versatile fields. SOLUTION: In this thermal head printing engine, a heating element 25a of a thermal head is adopted as a visible marker, and a printing start position on a printing medium can be set changeably by manipulating a home position knob 16. In addition, a positioning pin 27 arranged at the thermal head is inserted into a pin fitting hole 11a formed in a head mounting block 11, and is retained under pressure by an expandable/contractable plunger protrusion 28 arranged on the side of the pin 27, so that the thermal head can be detachably replaced. Further, drive motors 4 and 5 are embedded in a piggy-back style with the backs turned outwardly at a centerline 22 set to the middle, and a ribbon tape supply holder 2, a ribbon tape take-up holder 3 and guide rollers 6 and 7/8 and 9, are symmetrically arranged to the right/left, straddling the centerline 22. Therefore, even when optional countersymmetrical equipment are assembled, a ribbon tape hooking route 21 can comply with the outer periphery of such equipment as it is and the surface of a square board 1 can be effectively used for the mounting of the equipment.
