PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an indoor unit for an air conditioner which is capable of suppressing the occurrence of excess or deficiency of the suction amount of air. SOLUTION: This indoor unit 1 for an air conditioner comprises an indoor unit casing 2, a front panel 6, and a moving mechanism. The indoor unit casing 2 is provided with a first suction port 21. The front panel 6 is installed on the front of the indoor unit casing 2 and opens/closes the first suction port 21. The moving mechanism moves the front panel 6 to a closed state in which the front panel 6 closes the first suction port 21, to a first open state in which the front panel 6 opens the first suction port 21 after moving forward from the closed state, and to a second open state in which the front panel 6 opens the first suction port 22 to a greater degree after further moving forward from the first state. When the moving mechanism transfers the front panel 6 from the closed state to the first open state, it translates the front panel 6.
