PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact lens material with smooth surface, excellent in wettability to water and durability. SOLUTION: A method for producing the contact lens material composed of a contact lens substrate and a coating film formed on at least part of the substrate surface is provided. The above coating film is formed by subjecting the contact lens substrate to plasma polymerization treatment in a mixed gas atmosphere comprising methane and humid air followed by subjecting the resultant substrate to plasma treatment in a nonpolymerizable gas atmosphere.
