PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus in which optimal exposure conditions are speedily determined through simple arithmetic processing and a luminance of a photographed image is prevented from being flickered. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 1 comprises: an imaging element 3 including a plurality of pixels capable of switching linear transformation and logarithmic transformation in accordance with the quantity of incident light; a linear transformation section 13 for transforming an output signal of the imaging element 3 into a state linearly transformed from incident light; a compression section 14 for compressing a predetermined area component in the output signal; an extension section 15 for extending the predetermined area of a compressed electric signal and transforming it into a state before compression; a target luminance value storage section 17 for storing a target luminance value; a luminance difference calculation section 18 for calculating an AE evaluation value from the extended electric signal and calculating a luminance difference from the target luminance value; a suppression amount storage section 19 for storing an AE control suppression amount; and an AE control value calculation section 20 for calculating an AE control value multiplying the luminance difference by the AE control suppression amount, and determining exposure conditions based on the AE control value.
