A gas generator (1) comprising a short cylindrical housing (2) which includes a lower cover (2b) forming an initiator shell in which an igniting means is installed and an upper cover (2a) forming a closure shell closing the lower cover. Further, the igniting means (20) formed of an ignition agent charging container (19) having an igniter (9) and an ignition agent (17) therein and a tubular body (16) installed on the ignition agent charging container (19) in a fitted state to its outer surface, a gas generating agent (13), and a filter medium (11) are disposed in the housing (2) in this order starting at the center of the housing. As a result, the gas generator capable of stabilizing ignition performance can be provided by a simple structure.
