The method involves analyzing brightness difference and extracting edges from a recorded image data. Coherent images that are having similar brightness are combined to cluster for determining a form of objects. Lane markings are identified based on the form and periodic arrangement in the lane. The objects are identified as the lane markings and/or the lane markings types such as broken lines or dots are identified when distance and form of the object corresponds to a value of the typical lane markings, where the value is predetermined within the image.
