<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a configuration of an image forming system on the basis of system configuration information which is a combination of identification information of apparatuses with setting information of an arrangement order of the apparatuses corresponding to the identification information, without depending on connection of an exclusive line. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming system consists of an image forming apparatus, and at least either one of a paper feeding apparatus and a post-processing apparatus. Each of the apparatuses is connected to a network, communicating with an apparatus connected to the network. In the method for controlling the image forming apparatus which determines the image forming system for carrying out image formation, the system configuration information which is a combination of the identification information for identifying the apparatuses connected to the network with the setting information of the arrangement order of the apparatuses is registered in a storing means. It is determined on the basis of the system configuration information whether the apparatus corresponding to the identification information is usable or not.
