PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus wherein damage of a nozzle surface is suppressed. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus forms an image on a recording paper by delivering ink from nozzle holes. The image forming apparatus has a printing head equipped with the nozzle surface 22 where the nozzle holes are formed, an ink collecting member 56 which collects the ink, and a transferring means which transfers the ink on the nozzle surface 22 to the ink collecting member 56 by moving at least one of the printing head and the ink collecting member 56 in a direction 52 nearly perpendicular to the nozzle surface 22 and bringing the ink collecting member 56 into touch with the nozzle surface 22 at least once.
