PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tripod for transits capable of horizontally holding a transit and arranging the center position of the transit immediately above a survey reference point and provide a transit installation method using the same. SOLUTION: The tripod 10 for transits has a seating 12 for mounting the transit 11 and three legs 13-15 mounted to the seating 12, and each of the legs 13-15 is provided with an extension and contraction mechanism 16 for determining their overall length. Each of the legs 13-15 is provided with a fine adjustment mechanism 17 for finely adjusting the length of the legs 13-15 separately from the extension and contraction mechanism 16. The tripod 10 for transits to which the transit 11 is mounted is moved over the ground 37 to make the center position of the transit 11 close to a survey reference point O within a prescribed distance. The length of the legs 13-15 is finely adjusted to adjust the horizontality of the seating 12. The center position of the transit 11 is matched with the survey reference point by a horizontality fine adjustment mechanism 38 and a horizontal slide mechanism provided for the transit 11.
