PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic control unit for a vehicle capable of reducing as far as possible the number of times the learning information stored in a backup RAM is written into a nonvolatile memory. SOLUTION: The electronic control unit 100 for a vehicle reads an elapsed-time in the on-state of an ignition switch 201 from a timer-counter 116, and reads an elapsed-time in its off-state from a timer-counter 134, and on the basis of both elapsed times the electronic control unit 100 estimates the charging capacity of a vehicle-mounted battery 203. The time required for writing the learning information of the backup RAM 115 into the nonvolatile memory 120 is computed to set the computed period of time in a soak timer. When the set period of time is elapsed, the electronic control unit 100 is started up by the soak timer 130, and the learning information is written from the backup RAM 115 into the nonvolatile memory 120.
