Disclosed is an organic compound having excellent characteristics as a material for highly efficient and highly durable organic EL devices. Also disclosed is a highly efficient and highly durable organic EL device produced by using such a compound. Specifically disclosed is a compound represented by the general formula (1) below, which has an oxadiazole ring structure to which an aromatic heterocyclic ring is bonded. Also specifically disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device containing such a compound.
