A mobile terminal having an adaptive power control function and a method thereof are provided to check the state of the terminal and intercept power according to the state mode of the terminal, thereby improving the use convenience of services using an RFID and significantly reducing unnecessary power consumption required to execute an RFID read mode. A mobile terminal having an adaptive power control function comprises the followings: an RFID(Radio Frequency Identification system) reader chip(204); a power supply unit(210) which selectively supplies power to the RFID reader chip(204) responding to a power control signal; a terminal state sensing unit(206); and a control unit(208) which controls the mobile terminal to generate a power control signal for power supply to the RFID reader chip(204) when the mobile terminal is in an operation waiting mode and provide the power control signal to the power supply unit(210) by generating a power control signal for power disconnection to the RFID reader chip(204) when the mobile terminal is in a waiting mode.
