Preparation of beta-dicarbonyl compounds by (a) reaction of an ester with a carbonyl compound in the presence of an inert solvent and an alkali metal amide and (b) addition to the reaction mixture from (a) of a carbonyl compound reactant and ester in conditions where the alkali metal alcoholate by-product reacts with the ester and reactant.
