PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the influence due to lateral electric field in driving a liquid crystal, having negative dielectric anisotropy in a homeotropic alignment mode.
SOLUTION: Since an alignment layer 16 is formed with deposition along an X-direction, an easy-to-align axis of a liquid crystal molecule 50a is directed along the X-direction, as shown in Figure. Consequently the easy-to-align axis of the liquid crystal molecule 50a is directed along the X-direction, as shown in the Figure. During a liquid crystal device 1 is driven, a vertical electric field is applied between a counter electrode 21 and a pixel electrode 9a, and the liquid crystal molecule 50a is aligned in the X-direction which is the easy-to-align axis. Here, the lateral electric field along a Y-direction is made to be applied between pixel electrodes 9a mutually adjacent in the Y-direction. As the liquid crystal molecule 50a has negative dielectric anisotropy, it tends to align so as to have its long axis perpendicular to the direction of the electric field. Consequently, even when the lateral electric field is applied to the liquid crystal molecule 50a in a region C1, the alignment of the liquid crystal molecule 50a will not be influenced by the lateral electric field, but will be alignment-controlled, according to the vertical electric field.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
