PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a martensitic stainless steel having a tempered hardness of≥55 in HRC, having excellent corrosion resistance and cold workability, and also free from the generation of cracks upon quenching-subzero treatment. SOLUTION: The martensitic stainless steel has a composition comprising, by weight, <0.15% C, 0.01 to <0.20% Si, 0.01 to 2.0% Mn,≤0.03% P,≤0.03% S, 0.01 to 3.0% Cu, 0.01 to 3.0% Ni, 13.0 to 20.0% Cr, 0.01 to 4.0% Mo, 0.01 to 1.0% V,≤0.030% Al, <0.020% Ti,≤0.020% O, 0.40 to 0.80% N and 0.0005 to 0.0050% B, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and has a tempered hardness of≥55 in HRC.
