PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer capable of forming detergent compositions which are excellent in the smoothness in passing fingers through the hair in rinsing after washing and in the smoothness, nongreasiness, and nonstiffness of the hair after drying, and to provide detergent compositions containing the copolymer. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the copolymer comprising constituent units of a cationic vinyl monomer (A) and constituent units of a specific vinyl monomer (B) having a hydroxyl group or an amide linkage, wherein the content of the constituent units of the monomer (A) is 25 to 45% by mole based on the whole of the constituent units of the copolymer, and the invention relates to the detergent compositions containing the copolymer.
