PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler capable of efficiently reducing a sound pressure level of an exhaust sound of a low frequency while being compact. SOLUTION: This muffler has a muffler body 3 having a plurality of resonance chambers 1 and a plurality of expansion chambers 2. The resonance chambers 1 and the expansion chambers 2 are arranged so as to be alternately juxtaposed in the longitudinal direction of the muffler body 3. The predetermined first expansion chamber 2a among the plurality of expansion chambers 2, the first resonance chamber 1a adjacent to the first expansion chamber 2a and the second resonance chamber 1b arranged via its adjacent second expansion chamber 2b, are communicated with and connected to the first resonance chamber 1a and the second expansion chamber 2b by a penetrating resonance pipe 4.
