The engine has a combustion chamber and a fuel injection device, where a fuel/air mixture is chemically converted in the combustion chamber. The temperature of the fuel/air mixture is increased using variables in a valve train for initiating self-ignition associated with the homogeneous combustion in the combustion chamber. Controllers are provided for controlling combustion state and indicated mean pressure in the combustion chamber.
