PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift device of an automatic transmission allowing an operator to make a shift operation without attention for avoiding touching a release button, at the time of shift operation not requiring operation of pushing the release button, and thereby capable of enhancing the degree of freedom in installation position of the release button and shape of the shift knob. SOLUTION: The shift device of the automatic transmission includes a P release button retention mechanism 16 holding the P release button 9 freely capable of being pressed into the shift knob 4. By turning off a solenoid coil 18b, the P release button 9 is made to protrude from surface 4c of the shift knob 4 when inhibiting a shift lever from shifting by operation of a shift lever lock mechanism. The P release button 9 can be pressed into the shift knob 4 to lock in condition that the P release button 9 is pressed into the shift knob 4 by turning on the solenoid coil 18b when the shift lever lock mechanism is not activated and the shift lever is movable.
