PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal display element has a simple structure. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has pixel electrodes which are arranged in a matrix, a common electrode which is opposed to the pixel electrodes, a liquid crystal layer which contains a memory type liquid crystal material sandwiched between the pixel electrodes and common electrode, and a switching means which controls the application and cutoff of a voltage to the pixel electrodes, and is characterized in that the state of liquid crystal is renewed in the order of erasure of an image, writing of an image, and display of the image by applying mutually different voltages to the common electrode according to the erasure period of the image, the writing period of the image, and the display period of the image.
