PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium conveying mechanism for conveying a sheet-like recording medium which is capable of enhancing the operability. SOLUTION: The medium conveying mechanism 3 comprises a rotatable conveying roller 21, a substantially columnar conveying roller 23 which is rotated together with the conveying roller 21 with a recording medium held therebetween to convey a recording medium, a supporting unit 25 for supporting the conveying roller 23 in an approaching/separating manner to/from a circumferential surface of the conveying roller 21, and an operation unit for moving the conveying roller 23 according to the movement of an operation unit. While the operation unit is arranged at the first position, the conveying roller 23 is arranged at the position separate from the conveying roller 21. While the operation unit is moved in one direction from the first position and arranged at the second position, the conveying roller 23 is pressed against the circumferential surface of the conveying roller 21. While the operation unit is further moved in one direction from the second position, and arranged at the third position, the pressure of the conveying roller 23 at the second position is changed.
