PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer capable of adequately controlling the tension of an ink ribbon even if the ink ribbon is used in a large volume. SOLUTION: This thermal transfer printer comprises a thermal head, a platen roller forming a transfer region between it and the thermal head by being pressed against the thermal head, a supply core for supplying the ink ribbon to the transfer region by rotating around a rotational shaft, a torque limiter for maintaining the torque of the rotational shaft to be in a torque limitation value, a residual amount calculation means for calculating the residual amount of the ink ribbon on the supply core, a load torque generation means that operates according to a control signal to generate load torque for reducing the torque limitation value of the torque limiter and transmits the load torque to the torque limiter, and a tension control means for outputting, to the load torque generation means, a control signal for increasing the load torque as the residual amount of the ink ribbon measured by the residual amount calculation means is decreased.
