The invention relates to a method for in-vitro diagnosis, risk-assessment and/or course checking of sepsis or generalised acute inflammations, characterised by determining the content of apolipoprotein A1 [APO A1] in a sample from a patient and/or derivatives thereof and analysing whether the value thereof is higher or lower with relation to a control group in order to decide on the presence of a sepsis or a generalised acute inflammation, the course and/or treatment success of a sepsis or a generalised acute inflammation.
