<p>A chip comprising a glass, a reflective film coating the glass, and a dielectric layer formed on the reflective film is used. A light waveguide mode sensor comprises a light directing mechanism that introduces light onto the reflective film from the glass side of the chip and a light detection mechanism that detects the light reflected by the reflective film. By using a light incident angle region in which the intensity of the reflected light decreases by combining part or all of the incident light with a light waveguide mode propagating in a light waveguide path formed by a dielectric layer, it is possible to read variation of the incident angle or the reflected light intensity that occurs when a substance to be detected is adsorbed or attached onto the surface of the dielectric layer, thereby detecting the substance.</p>
