PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator for which an optimum kind or the optimum number of light sources is selected according to performance or price, without having to change a voltage supplied to a circuit to which the light sources are to be connected, even when the voltage supplied to the circuit to which the light sources are to be connected has been determined in advance. SOLUTION: The illuminator is for irradiating an electro-optical panel 2 with illumination light, wherein the light sources 36 and a voltage control means 33 are connected in series, and the voltage control means 33 divides the voltage that is to be supplied to the circuit 32.
