PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve luminance during a white display period, and to improve the contrast by essentially uniforming the number of particle layers in spreading the particles in in-plane directions, thereby laying at least one layer of charged migrating particles on an electrode during a black display period and simultaneously minimizing the number of particles, although the number of particle layers fluctuates during the black display period, to cause the lowering of contrast in a conventional in-plane type electrophoretic display element. SOLUTION: The electrophoretic display element is characterized in that the shape of pixel electrode or contact hole extends continuously or discontinuously, as well as extending radially from a pixel center.
