Disclosed is an expandable resol type phenolic resin molding material containing a liquid resol type phenolic resin, a foaming agent, a foam control agent, an additive and an acid curing agent. The additive contains a nitrogen-containing crosslinked cyclic compound, and the foaming agent contains a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon compound having 2-5 carbon atoms. Also disclosed is a phenolic resin foam obtained by foaming and curing such a molding material.
