PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optical encoder that is equipped with a smaller coincident index channel. SOLUTION: The optical encoder 500 consists of a series of (i) first region (552, 952) and second region (554, 954) which alternate in a first direction. The optical encoder includes A/B pattern (550, 950), which have the first region (552, 952) having a different optical transmissivities or reflectivities, as compared with those of the second region (554, 954), and (ii) encoder pattern (505, 905) which have index pattern (560, 570; 960) mounted adjacent A/B pattern (550, 950) in the first direction.
