PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval method that can quickly and accurately retrieve documents and images from ones which have different image resolutions, formats and languages, and edit the retrieved documents and images to reuse them. SOLUTION: The image retrieval method extracts the pixel density distribution of a retrieval target image, and then compares the extracted pixel density distribution of the retrieval target image with that of each reference image using a database storing image data, pixel density distribution data and main area data of a plurality of reference images to retrieve reference images that match the retrieval target image. In addition, the image retrieval method extracts main area data of the retrieval target image, and then compares the extracted main area data of the retrieval target image with that of the reference images retrieved using image density distributions to retrieve a reference image that matches the retrieval target image.
