PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that uses liquid developer, by which an image of high image quality having no transfer omission and having good fixability is obtained, by adjusting the degree of removal of liquid carrier from a developer image on an intermediate transfer body and improving secondary transferability and fixability. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 includes: an image carrier 1; a developing device 4 by which a latent image formed on the image carrier is developed with high-viscosity/high-concentration liquid developer 47 comprising liquid carrier and toner dispersed in the liquid carrier; a primary transfer device 6 by which the visible image formed on the image carrier by the developing device is transferred to the intermediate transfer body 61; and a secondary transfer device 9 by which the visible image formed on the intermediate transfer body by the primary transfer device is transferred to a transfer material S. The image forming apparatus 100 is provided with a toner particle layer compressing means 62 which is brought into contact with the visible image formed on the intermediate transfer body and compresses the toner particle layer of the visible image.
