PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller which strikes a balance between the reliability of safety control and the sufficient throughput of an original control task without damaging the reliability of the safety control even in complicated diagnostic technique. SOLUTION: This self-diagnostic system has a diagnostic area assignment means 31 for making a inactive area 26 which is not used in the control task 22a during execution of a main processor of a memory 20 into a diagnosis permission area independently of the main processor 10 and a diagnosis execution means 32 for executing diagnosis by a predetermined sequence to the diagnosis permission area assigned by the diagnostic area assignment means independently of the main processor, selects an object area for diagnosis segmented from the diagnosis permission area and executes the diagnosis in the respective diagnostic cycles by the diagnosis execution means.
