PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of reducing the thickness of a hot slab by which yield can be improved due to the reduction of width correcting work such as an edger and the reduction of trimming by reducing a width spread W at the reduction in a thickness direction and a width distributionΔW while holding excellent productivity when performing the reduction in the thickness direction by a thickness reducing press. SOLUTION: The ratio Lf/Ld of a feed rate Lf to the contact length Ld is taken as≥0.6 and the reduction is performed while rotating the die 2 until the reducing surface 19 on the downstream side is parallel to the advancing direction of the slab so that contact surface of a die 2 with the slab 1 changes from the upstream side in the advancing direction of the slab to the downstream side during the thickness reduction.
