The device (1) has a distance sensor (10) measuring a degree of deformation of an outer plate of a engine bonnet (20) of a vehicle (2) in a downward bent direction by determining a distance between an inner plate and the outer plate. A control unit (11) determines whether collision of the vehicle with a pedestrian is occurred or not based on a measurement result of the distance sensor. The engine bonnet is positioned at front and rear sections of the vehicle, where the deformation includes a downward component. An independent claim is also included for a pedestrian protection system comprising a pedestrian collision detection device and a pedestrian protection device.
