PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, an image forming apparatus, a control method, and a program in which shading correction is made so as to be hardly affected by trash or dust stuck on a reference member. SOLUTION: A document read controller 116 of the image reader comprises a shading correction circuit 301, a shading correction memory 302, a dust detection circuit 303, and a detection result holding memory 304. When data lower than or equal to a predetermined threshold are detected from a read result of a reference white board 114, the dust detection circuit 303 preserves position information and a detection frequency of the data in the detection result holding memory 304. If dust is detected even once as a result of reading the reference white board 114, the shading correction circuit 301 performs correction processing for replacing dust detection pixel data through linear interpolation using read values around a dust detection position upon all the dust detection pixel data stored in the detection result holding memory 304.
