PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent smolder of a spark plug due to the concentration of spray raised from a crown surface in a direct injection internal combustion engine having a fuel injection valve arranged facing the crown surface of a piston and injecting fuel toward a cavity on the crown surface. SOLUTION: A means forming gas flow F including swirl composition in a circumference direction having a cylinder axis as a reference in the cylinder is provided. In stratified combustion, spray S rising in the cylinder is biased by the gas flow F via the cavity 121. A spark plug 22 is deviated from a flow line L1 on which main flow of the spray S proceeds.
