PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coater for coating a surface to be coated with a fluid material having a high viscosity, the coater for preventing retention of the fluid material in a hopper portion and capable of securely coating both ends in a width direction on the surface to be coated. SOLUTION: The coater 1 for coating a surface to be coated with a fluid material having a high viscosity comprises a hopper portion 2 for reservoiring the fluid material, a gear pump 3 for pressure-feeding the fluid material supplied from the hopper portion 2, and a slot portion 4 for discharging the fluid material onto the surface to be coated, wherein the hopper portion 2 is formed so as to extend along the width direction of the surface to be coated, and retention preventing means 12 for preventing retention of the fluid material is provided on at least both ends in the width direction of the hopper 2.
