948,420. Sewing machines. MAN-SEW CORPORATION. May 2, 1962 [May 8, 1961], No. 16825/62. Heading D1G. In a sewing machine which simultaneously produces overedge stitching and a line of through stitching parallel therewith, the overedge stitching is performed at a rate which is a submultiple of the rate at which the through stitching is performed. As shown, two-thread overedge stitching is performed half as fast as two-thread chain stitching. A needle bar 5 carries a needle 8 and 9. Needle 8 co-operates with a threaded looper 23 and a spreader 19 to produce the through stitching. Needle 9 co-operates with a threaded looper 40 and a spreader to produce one edge stitching. The bed shaft drives a shaft 14 carrying a crank pin 16 adapted to rock an arm 18, carrying the spreader 19, in the line of feed. The bed shaft also drives a shaft 20 which, via a pitman 21, oscillates a shaft 22 to rock the looper 23 carried thereby across the line of feed. Looper 40 and spreader 41 are respectively carried by shafts 42 and 46 journalled in a casing 25 mounted on the bed plate 24. A shaft 28, journalled in casing 25, is driven via a universal joint 29 at the speed of the bed shaft, and drives shafts 42 and 46 via 2 to 1 reduction gearing. Looper 40 and spreader 41 thereby co-operate with needle 9 only on alternate penetrations of the latter to produce a stitch length twice that produced by needle 8. A shaft 33, journalled in casing 25, is driven at the same speed as shaft 28, and carries an edgetrimming blade. Specifications 779,132, 802,833, 915,349 and 929,514 are referred to. |
