Pyrosulphuryl chloride is prepared by reacting sulphur trioxide with sulphur monochloride in the presence of dry gaseous chlorine, and eliminating the sulphur dioxide formed as a by-product. The sulphur monochloride and chlorine are introduced into liquid sulphur trioxide while the reaction temperature is maintained at not more than 30 DEG C.; the reaction mixture is then stirred at 20-30 DEG C. for an hour and treated at 95 DEG C. for 3 hours to drive off residual sulphur trioxide. |
