PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pavement marking recognition system capable of reducing a processing load by detecting only pavement marks fulfilling a predetermined standard based on images taken by an imaging means. SOLUTION: The pavement marking recognition system is structured so that, when it is determined that a pavement marking which has been classified as a fading pattern to be detected is present within an area a predetermined distance from a vehicle 2 (S2: YES), the pavement marking is recognized (S5) based on an image taken by a rear camera 3, and also the distance to an object that is to be controlled and is associated with the pavement marking having been recognized from the vehicle 2 is calculated (S7-S10); and when the distance to the object to be controlled is determined to be a predetermined distance (S11: YES), guidance of traveling of the vehicle or control of the vehicle is performed (S14) according to the kind of the associated object to be controlled.
