PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive encoder of high reliability with a compact size by simplifying circuit constitution and reducing the number of part items. SOLUTION: This signal processing circuit for the encoder has: a plurality of detectors 2a, 2b for generating signals different each other in phases; a switching circuit 4 for selecting the signals from the plurality of detectors 2a, 2b in an alternative way; and a waveform shaping circuit 5 for waveform-shaping the output signal from the detector switched by the switching circuit 4. The output signal from the waveform shaping circuit 5 is monitored while correlating with an operation of the switching circuit 4, and also a proper processing can be performed for the signals of waveform shaped by switching provided with a direction determination/counting part 6 for judging a moving direction and a moving amount to count the moving amount.
