<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material that contains formaldehyde-free, cured binder composition and a method of making the same. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to the composite materials containing (a) a substrate material selected from fibers, slivers, chips and combinations thereof; and, (b) a cured binder composition comprising a step-reaction copolymer produced from at least one cyclic anhydride and at least one epoxy alcohol, wherein one of the at least one epoxy alcohol has only one epoxy group; and, wherein the composite material comprises ≤40 wt.% cured binder composition.
