<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable optical element in which optical characteristics of the variable optical element can be locally changed into a desired pattern without decreasing the quantity of transmitting light in the variable optical element, and to provide an optical device using the variable optical element. <P>SOLUTION: The variable optical element using a semiconductor nano-crystal is characterized in that a current is locally applied to the semiconductor nano-crystal to change the refractive index and thereby, to locally modulate a phase of light transmitting the semiconductor nano-crystal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
