<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a birefringent film and a polarizing plate capable of forming a liquid crystal display device of STN type, etc. which is thin and light in weight and is excellent in contrast and viewing angle by providing a film which exhibits optical activity as well as birefringence and is capable of compensating twist of liquid crystal. <P>SOLUTION: The elliptically polarizing plate comprises a stacked body between at least one sheet of birefringent film made of a stretched film of which the chromacity coordinate x, y forms a circular locus on a CIE chromacity diagram when the film is disposed between two sheets of polarizing plates and one side polarizing plate is rotated. The liquid crystal display device has the birefringent film between a liquid crystal cell and the polarizing plate. Accordingly, the manufacture of the birefringent film is facilitated and the liquid crystal display device which is excellent in the degree of achievement of white and black display and color display can be provided by prevention of coloring. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
