PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device wherein utilizing efficiency of light radiated from an organic EL backlight is heightened. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with the organic EL backlight 10, a liquid crystal panel 20, a linear polarization reflecting plate 30 and an absorbing plate 40 which are disposed to be parallel to each other at respective intervals so that the organic EL backlight 10 is interposed between the liquid crystal panel 20 and the linear polarization reflection plate 30 and the linear polarization reflection plate 30 is interposed between the organic EL backlight 10 and the absorbing plate 40. The organic EL backlight 10 has a construction wherein a transparent electrode 12 to be an anode, an organic EL layer 13 and a transparent electrode 14 to be a cathode are layered in this order on the front surface of a transparent substrate 11 and an organic luminescence layer in the organic EL layer 13 contains a phosphorescent organic EL material having 100 nsec to 1 msec emission life.
