PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low phosphorus lubricating oil composition which improves fuel economy and reduces high-temperature oxidation, piston deposit formation and wear. SOLUTION: The lubricating oil composition contains (a) a major amount of a base oil of lubricating viscosity, (b) about 0.1-10 mass% overbasic alkaline earth metal alkylaryl sulfonate cleaning agent having a total base number (TBN) of about 25-500, (c) about 0.02-10 mass% oxymolybdenum-containing complex, (d) about 0.1-5 mass% friction modifier and (e) about 0.2-10 mass% antioxidant chosen from the group consisting of a diphenylamine compound, a sulfur-containing compound and a mixture thereof, provided that the total concentration of the oxymolybdenum-containing complex and the antioxidant is at least 1.3 mass% based on the total mass of the lubricating oil composition, and the phosphorus content in the entire lubricating oil composition is≤0.08 mass% based on the total mass of the lubricating oil composition.
